Six-thousand, six-hundred sixty-six steps

The situation: it's your first turn of a two player game, and you are the starting player. You are playing with the base game Chronicle of the Godslayer and the new expansion Return of the Fallen.

Your hand: the standard 4 Apprentice and 1 Militia.

The board: interesting, there are no monsters on the table. And the only construct is Dartha's Retreat.

  • Lunar Stag (H-L - C:3 - 1H - Gain +2r OR +2h)
  • Dartha's Retreat (C-E - C:4 - 3H - If you do not acquire or defeat a card during your turn, you may draw two additional cards at the end of your turn)
  • Mechana Initiate (H-M - C:1 - 1H - Gain +1r or +1h)
  • Battery Monk (H-M - C:2 - 1H - You may pay 1r less the next time you acquire a Construct this turn. Draw a card)
  • Dimension Diver (H-M - C:3 - 1H - Gain +2r. You may treat all Constructs as Mechana Constructs this turn)
  • Demon Slayer (H-V - C:4 - 2H - Gain +3p)
What do you do? As always, don't forget Mystics, Heavy Infantry and the Cultist!

  1. My initial call is to go with the Lunar Stag and the Initiate (even though most people think the Initiate is one of the worst cards in the game, he can be banished and provides versatility to some extent).

HOWEVER, while working the Ascension booth at GenCon, I saw Justin Gary take Dhartha's Retreat First turn. Buy 2 Mystics on turns 2 and 3, Retreat on turn 4, and then Buy Adayu on turn 5. needless to say he won that game by quite a few points.

  2. I think you could also make a strong case for the Demon Slayer. The fact that there aren't many monsters in the center row makes me think that they might be coming out in clumps later, and in that case, the +3 power would help immensely.

  3. I would make a case to pick neither of the 4's actually, you could easily just take battery monk, see your flip and then buy an infantry, on the next turn you know you're getting 4 again and if you send the infantry signal demonslayer should be yours and i've seen battery monk go a long way in the aggressive power decks. That said i think Dhartha's reatreat is the best card there. just like 1st post, you can set up some pretty insane early buys with it if the stuff to buy gets flipped 6's/7's/amd 8's are no problem after a little retreat.

  4. My initial reaction to seeing this board is take demon slayer - however, i have never played w/ retreat as anything other than 3 VP for 4 that doesn't clog. after reading that the creator of the game would first pick it - i will definitely try that out in the near future.

  5. I´d buy the Demon Slayer. Dartha´s Retreat is a fine card, but there are no good insane expensive targets now, so probably that one isn´t going to do much.

  6. I am not a big fan of the Retreat. Cept possibly in early game situations. Doing nothing on your turn (unless you have a ton of lifebounds that give you free honor) is a sure fire way to lose, even if you get a GREAT next turn. Too much waste is not good.

    SO...

    1. First hand if I see this board I am grabbing the Slayer every single time. Like GNG said above the monsters are there and will likely be out later. Grab the 3 power now, at worst it's worth 1.5 honor every time you play it.

    2. The other outside option, is the Stag + Mech Initiate for some utility. Plus the stag pairs with the retreat well if it's still there on your next turn and want to give that a go.

But 99 out of 100 I am grabbing that slayer and being happy with it.
